In this edition of our Dawson's Creek rewatch, the Capeside (now Boston) crew heads on a spring break trip to Miami. Charlie shows up (with a tent?) to woo Joey, but then so does Dawson... and Audrey's ex high school boyfriend who is now a world-famous movie star.

In Episode 20, they are all back in Boston and Pacey and Audrey have a new boss, who (of course) has a thing for Pacey. Also, Jen coughs a lot but there's no explanation.

Lightning-Speed Rewatch Setup

SPEAKER_00

Hi everyone! Welcome back to our Dawson's Creek rewatch here on Generation in Between. This is gonna be a very fast one because Katie has to work in 15 minutes. I do. So this is lightning speed. Speed Dawsons. We are on uh season five of our rewatch, and we are going to talk about season five, episode 19 first called Light Years from Home. The summary is as a spring break trip to Florida forces Pacey and Audrey to admit their true feelings for each other. Joey must decide how to handle a persistent Charlie. Yeah, so persistent, is that what we're calling him? Psycho, is what I'd say. It's creepy. Creepy. He's trying to find her. It's the whole freaking step-by-step premise again. I know. She goes on vacation without him on purpose. Dumb. And it's not like now where like you can have like the Snap map or like whatever. Like, what is that? Oh, that's on Snapchat. Girl, I don't use Snapchat. It's well, it's a map of where all your friends are at all times. Oh god, that would just make me feel like I was missing out on everything. You can opt. That's the point. Yeah. Well, I think it can. No, that's what I'm saying. I think it it does make people feel that way. You're like, people feel like no, it is. It's it's to make you feel like um tethered to it to see like what your friends are doing all the time. I hate it. You can opt out of it, but that's what that is. So, but yeah, so he sh he keeps calling different people to track her down and then finds her and comes to Audrey's and brings a tent. And come on. Audrey's like family's like vacation home in Miami. Yeah. Which, yeah, okay, whatever. But also, they all looked freezing. Yeah. They obviously filmed this in New England somewhere. Yeah, they must have. I was gonna say it didn't really look like Miami. They like some people had on jackets and then the extras had on bikinis, and I'm like, uh what? Uh oh. But I thought they established last episode that Audrey and Pacey were together. So did I. I was very confused. I was and now they're still kind of having the back and forth on boyfriend, girlfriend on this one. I really like in um before they are in Miami, in Dawson's attic room, he has that imagine poster. Yeah. That John Lennon. That's been there, Katie. That's the first time I noticed it. Oh shit. It was in his how oh my god. That has been there since he redid his room way back. I guess it wasn't as prominent. No, it was in the exact same spot. Really? Above his bed?

Yeah.

Someone needs glasses. A second pair of glasses. Well, I'm glad you're still amazed by it. That's I am upset by this brand new Imagine Post. Literally, he brought it from his bedroom at home. Yeah. And we talk, and you you had said before that you liked that poster.

Well, I wonder if I can find I wouldn't no, I'm not looking at it. Yeah, that's gonna take too long. So I will say the opening scene where he's talking about the dreams of this lifetime was really hard to watch. I know. He's like, oh, and like I know the dreams, and we gotta chase them, and you know, because life is so precious and like stuff like that. I was like, oh no, no, no, don't do it, Dawson. Um, okay, this M2M group, do you remember them? The the pop group that's in the episode. What is this band? I looked them up, they were real, they're a real group, and they had um a hit song in the Pokemon movie that came out around then '99, 2000. They had like three three songs listed. Okay. Well, I don't know. Yeah, I looked them up. I didn't know them either. I wrote MTV Spring Break L O L. I know. That was really funny. I used to watch it. Me too. It was very entertaining. It's so entertaining. I never did get to go on a big spring break trip um just because my mom wouldn't let me in. I didn't have any money. And then when I was in college, I really didn't have any money. Yeah, like I never went, I know you went to Key West, which we've talked about before, but um I used to vicariously live through MTV spring break, but then I don't remember what it was called, but they would have just like half-hour blocks, and it was just like a DJ and people just like dancing and grinding on each other for like half an hour, and that was the whole program. You knew it. They could not have alcohol on the TV. No, but you they're drinking it off. Also, I wrote, Why is Joey wearing church mom clothes at a spring break? I wondered that too, like that cardigan. Like a long skirt or something. Yeah, she looked dumb. Yeah, she looked a little out of place. Like, no, and I guess that's what the their goal. They wanted her to look out of place, but like she looked like you're gonna say they wanted her to look dumb. Well, they wanted her to look out of place. I guess I guess that's probably what they were going for. And also, why are people in jackets? I wrote it really bothered me because I wrote, Why are people in jackets but also bikinis? I I honestly didn't like have continuity. Yeah, I don't know why shit like that bothers me in in shows. Yeah, probably because I'm always freezing all the time and I'm always like, Well, they have on a jacket, but she's has nothing on. I feel like the one with nothing on must be cold. Well, right if they're in jackets. Because if it's 85 degrees, they ain't gonna put the main characters in jackets. No, you're right. Wow, that really that really got under your skin. I know. Um Dawson skipping his meeting to see Joey. Oh, I know. Nah, nah. I didn't love that. Although, again, what a youthful thing. They are just like they're in the Boston area and they're like, let's drive to Miami in my Jeep. I know. Uh, or I guess he drove by himself. Uh then, oh, the scene where like Charlie's like getting ready to surf. And they've got him standing on the surfboard. Then they have the whole montage of her. Like, it was strange. Yeah, there's strange stuff going on. And then um, I did love this line from Pacey. He's talking to Dawson when Dawson arrives, and he's basically encouraging him not to like go after Joey or whatever. And he calls them the heroes of bad timing. Yeah. I feel like that's us too. What do you mean? I feel like we always like everything always happens all at once, not with romance. Um thanks. I mean, like, because doesn't like everything always like happen at the wrong time? Yeah, like the wrong opportunities come when we're so busy. Yes. And we're like, although you know what's working in oh god, why are we bringing that up? Thanks, Katie. Sorry. Dig that deeper a little bit. I'm just kidding. You know what is working out, is we're going to Gaga finally, fucking tomorrow on a Friday. It better happen. I have a little bit of like anxiety that the same thing's gonna happen. No, that we're gonna get there and be in line and they're gonna freaking cancel it again. That's why I feel like I need to wear the exact same thing I wore last time. I feel like if I don't, like I have to like, I feel like I don't know. I feel the opposite. I need to wear something different. Oh, did you find that spiky headband? Yeah. Is it have it? No, it's at my house. Don't forget text me when I get home. It doesn't work all the time. Texting me. I'll tell you what. Text me and text Amelia. Okay. All right tonight and in the morning until I have a picture of it in the back of the house. That's why I didn't bring Katie the wig. I had to brush out this wig, which by the way, a mom chased me down because she thought I was stealing her daughter's wig. It was so funny. I asked one of my students to borrow her wig for Gaga, and the mom was super nice, and the girl was super nice. They're like, sure, of course. So then, not thinking about it at an event, I handed it to Danny, and Danny walked out the building with it. Well, this mom and child do not know Danny. Panicking. So she goes, Hey, excuse me, excuse me. Is that my daughter's wig? And I was like, Well, yeah, but I mean, I I said, No, I said, Well, I and Katie didn't tell me this was not her studio's wig. I didn't. So I'm like, uh, no, I'm doing this for Katie. Like, this is Katie's. And she's like, No, that's my daughter's wig. And I'm like, Do you mean this is the studio's wig? Like, we were both very confused, and she was ready to slap me. But it's fine. All right, we have to hurry up because Katie. We gotta go. Okay, that's all I had on that one. Oh no, I was so sad with Jack. I know. Like he's drinking a lot because he's going through hard times, and then he's crying at the end, and he says, Can I just start over? God, I know that feeling. Poor guy. I know. That whole little side story with him is like really sad. And and everyone's so wrapped up in their own stuff. I know. Jen notices enough to say something, but doesn't have a whole lot of follow-up with it, which is fine. I mean, I'm not saying she needs it's her responsibility, but it feels like everyone's so busy that they're not really noticing him going through that. And why did they make her sick this episode? I was waiting for the payoff for that. Like, we wouldn't find it. I don't know. Because I think we kind of season five, episode 20, separate ways, parentheses, worlds apart. That is a trend today. Go listen to our new kids episode. I can't. As a tour for Charlie's band leaves Joey facing a big decision, Pacey and Audrey find that the restaurant's new ownership will mean big changes for both of them. Now, did you either know or remember that this woman was gonna try to did not remember? I saw it coming right away. I mean, I saw it coming, but I didn't remember. But you didn't remember it yet. Yeah, yeah. So now we've got this new manager, woman, of course, attractive, who's attracted to Pacey. Older woman. And I don't know if you noticed, but they kept establishing the fact that he was 19 through the whole episode. And I was like, so we're saying it's fine. It's still his boss, which is inappropriate, and she's a lot older than him. And I wrote, more older women, younger men. Boo. Not that you can't have that, but I mean, when I say younger, he's 19. He's still a kid to me. He is an adult, but like still. I don't think he's an adult. Right. 19 is not adult. I'm until you fucking have paid a mortgage or had to pay for health insurance. You are not old. I agree with that. That's what I'm saying. He has traveled the world on a sailboat. So his frontal lobe ain't there. You you finish your brain forming. Right. Then talking about it. Which is why you date other 19-year-olds and 20-year-olds and all that until you're all a mess, but it just bothers me. And also, like, what what do you a predatory woman? What are you doing? What are you doing? Why do you want to be with a 19-year-old? The plot itself is thin. It's very thin. Like, it's like not very believable. But speaking of also relationships, so did Joey sleep with Charlie or not? I don't know. I can't tell. Because it seems like a no, but then like would he really still be there? Don't tell me he all of a sudden turned a corner. I mean he might have. I don't think so. I think they're trying to make us think he did. But I'm like, did they sleep together or not? Are we supposed to know this? When she wakes up in that tent, yeah, are we supposed to know? She was totally clothed and like still in her cardigan. Well, right, but you can still have I know. But her clothes back on. I think they were trying to show that they didn't. Katie's like, her clothes were on. Nothing happened. I saw nothing. Um I don't know. I think they didn't, but I'm not sure. So then this whole premise where he at least Joey said the right thing, where he wants, he, Charlie, wants her to quit school and go on the road with him with this group. That's stupid. And she says, Why would I do that? This finally. This is my life, and I love it here. Finally, because she always be trying to uproot her life. Seriously. And then I love when she's talking to Audrey about it. And she says to Audrey, She's like, I can't even do a fling right. Like this, I'm glad he's going. I'm glad it's ending because this is a short-term thing that I did. Like, like she's saying, I was not trying to have a relationship with this person. I was trying something new. I was trying to fling it. And it's not working out for me. That was me back in the day. I would try flings, and it I just never happened. I have told you, I'm not that kind of person. I just You can't do it. I'm a penguin. What is it? Is that right? Monogamous. Yeah, penguins are monogamous. Yeah, that's me. And they like lifetime partners. They don't want to be by themselves. Being with multiple people at the same time is really hard. I can't do it. Nope. Anyway. And but then also Audrey was kind of so on one hand, she's like, you just gotta dump him. Just do it. Just dump him. It's fine. Break his heart. And then when he's like outside, she's like, you should go talk to me. I know. I was like, Audrey, get it together. Which is it, my friend? Get it together. Because your first piece of advice was the right one. Oh, he looks so sad. Go talk to him. Okay, so Oliver. Oh, I can't. He's a character, but I'm growing to like him. Really? Why? I don't know. He's quirky. He's quirky, but he's just He's a lot. I don't think he's likable. I don't know what his redeeming values are. The only thing I can think because Dawson in this episode calls him eccentric. He goes he's eccentric or whatever. I'm like, yes. And I guess we're supposed to believe that because he's such a good artist, that's why like his outer socialism, like his social behavior is that way. But I don't know. I'm just having trouble with it. I think I even said I'm glad Oliver is gone. He's not though. So was the agent extending a contract to Dawson and Oliver? Because that scene was a little bit confusing. No, he was. It was both of them. Alright, so he's still here. I like him. That's fine. I grow to like him. And then I put Audrey and Joey fake fighting, made me laugh. Yeah, that was. I didn't understand why she was doing that. And everyone was so confused. They were like, what are you doing? Like the people involved were like, huh? Audrey is hilarious. She's unhappy. I love her. I feel like I was a lot like her in college. I I nothing Audrey will ever do will upset me. I love her too much. I think there might be. Is something coming up? Uh-huh. Don't tell me. All right. I'm trying to remember. But we made it through. Look at that. That was the lightning speed. That was. Oh, I said, I'm glad Charlie left, and I knew Alex was going after Pacey. That's the new manager. That's her name. Alex. Yeah. Anyway. I didn't mind those episodes. I thought they were fun. No, they were good. So we'll see what happens next time. I couldn't remember. Um do you think Michelle Williams was really sick during that episode? I don't know what that was. Because it didn't sound like like when she was talking, she didn't sound sick. But then when she coughed, I don't know. Maybe something's coming. But what? She had a cold? And four episodes later we learn why? I mean, that doesn't make sense. I don't know. I mean, I know. I guess we'll see. Well, okay, yeah, I won't say anything. I'll wait. If you don't remember, you don't remember. Well, thanks for listening, guys. Sorry I'm doing the work now. Very fast. That's okay. We have several other seasons of longer ones you can listen to, and um, we will see you next time on Generation in Between. Bye. Bye.
